Review School Safety Rules With Your Child
Students, families and school staff want to ensure that schools are a safe place to learn. Here are some ways you can help:
Know the school's protocols and rules. Ask to see a copy of the rules, and ask the school staff about any rules or policies you don't understand. If you disagree with a rule, discuss your views with the principal, not your child. Do not encourage your child to break the rule.
Talk about the rules with your child. Make sure your student knows exactly what is and is not allowed at school. You might say, "Hitting is never allowed at school. Even if another student makes you very angry."
Ask your child about what goes on at school—and not just about schoolwork. How do the other students behave? Does anything at school worry your child? When children try to take matters into their own hands, they can make bad choices. A child who feels threatened may decide to respond with violence. If your child has experienced or witnessed bullying, let the school know.
Talk about how to solve problems in positive ways.
Learn how the school is teaching children positive behaviors. Ask your child's teacher. Then, support those lessons at home.
